Osun West Under Senator Kamonrudeen Oyewumi Lere: Projects, Interventions and Constituency Impact

Senator Dr. Kamorudeen Olalere Oyewumi’s representation of Osun West in the National Assembly has been marked by a range of constituency interventions covering infrastructure, electricity, education, agriculture, empowerment and social support.

Across the senatorial district, his constituency projects and interventions have targeted some of the everyday challenges facing residents, while his legislative activities at the National Assembly have also focused on issues affecting communities within the district.

One of the major areas of intervention has been road infrastructure. Several road projects have been delivered or initiated across communities in Osun West, including the Oriolowo/Agbele Road and Fojugbagi/Adediti Road in Iwo, as well as the Bovas–Araromi Road in Oluponna. Other road projects reported under his representation include the Oke Ola–Oluofinrin–Anajere Road in Ikire, the Obada New Road–Wakajaye Junction project in Gbongan, and the Apomu–Abiri Junction road in Ikoyi. Further road interventions have also covered the Onijayi–Akogun–Olodo Onibata–Ikoyi Eleja route in Ile-Ogbo and other roads within the district.

The senator’s constituency interventions have also extended to bridges, drainage and flood-related infrastructure. Among them is the Cele–Ako interlink bridge in Ikire, while other drainage and channelisation works have been undertaken to address flooding and improve access between communities.

Electricity is another area in which his representation has produced constituency interventions. Communities in Ikire and other parts of Osun West have benefited from the provision and installation of transformers aimed at improving electricity supply. The interventions have included 500KVA transformers for communities such as Sunmoye and Ako in Ikire, as well as additional electricity facilities in other communities. Solar-powered streetlights have also formed part of the constituency projects.

Education has received significant attention through the provision and rehabilitation of school infrastructure. Reconstructed and improved facilities have been provided in schools including St. David Anglican Grammar School, Ode-Omu, where classroom blocks and other facilities were renovated alongside the provision of a library, halls, laboratory, staff rooms, administrative facilities and a motorised borehole. Other schools within the district have also benefited from classroom rehabilitation, furniture and other educational facilities.

The interventions have not been limited to physical infrastructure. Students from Osun West have received educational support, including sponsorship for students in tertiary institutions. Such interventions are aimed at reducing some of the financial difficulties faced by young people pursuing higher education.

Agriculture and livelihood support have equally featured prominently in the senator’s constituency programmes. Farmers across the senatorial district have received fertiliser and other forms of agricultural assistance, while women farmers have participated in empowerment and capacity-building programmes. Thousands of bags of fertiliser have been distributed as part of efforts to support agricultural production and improve the livelihoods of rural residents.

His empowerment programmes have also targeted youths, women, traders and artisans. Beneficiaries have received cash grants and vocational equipment, including sewing machines and other tools intended to help recipients establish or expand small businesses. Training programmes have also been organised in areas such as soap, disinfectant and air-freshener production, with financial support provided to participants to enable them to start their businesses.

Motorcycles have also been distributed to constituents as part of his empowerment initiatives, while people living with disabilities have received support, including wheelchairs.

The senator has also provided welfare assistance to constituents through the distribution of food items and other relief materials. Rice, clothing and other items have been distributed to residents as part of social-support interventions, particularly during periods when the cost of living has placed additional pressure on households.

At the legislative level, Oyewumi has raised issues affecting communities in Osun West through motions and other parliamentary interventions. He has drawn attention to flooding affecting communities including Ikire, Apomu and Gbongan and has sought government intervention on infrastructure challenges. He has also pursued legislative support for healthcare development in the district, including a proposal for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikire.

Beyond individual projects, the senator’s constituency interventions have sought to address several interconnected needs of the people transportation, electricity, education, agriculture, employment, small businesses and social welfare.

The emerging picture of Senator Oyewumi’s tenure is therefore one in which representation has been accompanied by physical projects and direct constituency interventions. From roads and bridges to transformers and school facilities, and from agricultural inputs to cash grants, vocational equipment and student support, the senator’s constituency programmes have touched several sectors across Osun West.

While some of the projects have been completed and commissioned, others remain at different stages of implementation. The overall record continues to develop as ongoing projects are completed and additional constituency interventions are delivered across the senatorial district.
