Kara Bridge Repairs Trigger Six-Hour Gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Motorists travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been hit by severe traffic congestion following ongoing repair work on the Kara Bridge, with some commuters reportedly spending up to six hours in gridlock.

The traffic situation became particularly difficult on Tuesday, as congestion stretched for several kilometres along the busy highway. The situation was further worsened by rainfall on Wednesday, which disrupted some aspects of the repair work and added to the difficulties faced by motorists using the corridor.

The ongoing intervention involves the replacement of damaged expansion joints on the Kara-Berger Bridge section of the expressway. The Federal Government had announced that the repair exercise would run from September 8 to September 22, 2026, with the work expected to improve the condition and safety of the bridge.

As part of the repairs, the number of lanes available to motorists has been reduced around the construction area. This has contributed significantly to the buildup of traffic, particularly during peak travel periods when thousands of vehicles use the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Some motorists have resorted to alternative routes to avoid the affected section of the expressway. Commuters travelling between Ogun State and Lagos have expressed frustration over the prolonged journey times, with some saying the situation has made it difficult to get to their destinations at the expected time.

A road safety official said the rainfall affected some planned construction activities, particularly work involving concrete and stonework. However, activities that could safely continue despite the weather were not completely suspended, with workers moving ahead with other stages of the repair.

Traffic and security personnel have also been deployed around strategic points to manage the situation and regulate the movement of vehicles. Despite these efforts, motorists have continued to experience delays as traffic builds up around the bridge and adjoining sections of the expressway.

The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Michael Komolafe, said the repair work was progressing despite the weather conditions. According to him, some stages of the work had already been completed before the rainfall, allowing contractors to proceed with other activities.

Authorities have continued to appeal to motorists to exercise patience while the repairs are ongoing and to consider alternative routes where possible. Motorists have also been advised to plan their journeys ahead and allow extra travel time when using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Kara Bridge repair is expected to be completed within the scheduled two-week period, subject to the progress of work and prevailing conditions at the construction site
