Olajokun Park, located at Gbongan Junction in Gbongan, Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, is in dire need of urgent attention from the Osun State Government following years of neglect and abandonment.

During the administration of former Governor Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, little or no visible effort was made to restore the facility. The situation has reportedly continued under the current administration of Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, leaving the once-promising recreational centre in a deteriorating condition.

Repeated Appeals Yet to Yield Results

Of particular concern is the fact that the Gbongan community has reportedly written to the Osun State Government more than five times, appealing for urgent intervention to rescue the park. Community representatives also reportedly visited the state government secretariat last year to formally lodge their complaints.

Despite these repeated efforts, the community says that no meaningful action has been taken to address the situation. As the days go by, the condition of Olajokun Park continues to worsen, raising concerns about the future of the facility and the public resources invested in its construction.

Security Concerns and Public Investment

Beyond its recreational value, the deteriorating condition of Olajokun Park raises security concerns. At a time when insecurity remains a major concern across the country, allowing a public facility to deteriorate without proper supervision, maintenance, or a clear plan for its use could create conditions that make it vulnerable to misuse, including becoming a possible hideout for criminal elements.

The government must therefore take proactive measures to secure the premises and prevent any potential security threats.

Furthermore, the authorities should consider the substantial public funds invested in the construction of the park. Whether the total expenditure amounted to millions or billions of naira, the facility represents public investment that should not be allowed to go to waste. Restoring and maintaining the park would help protect that investment and ensure that the people of Gbongan benefit from the project.

A Call for Urgent Government Intervention

We hereby call on the Osun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, to urgently investigate the present status of Olajokun Park, clarify its ownership or lease arrangements where necessary, and develop a concrete plan for its rehabilitation and sustainable management.

The government should also engage the Gbongan community to understand its concerns and work towards a lasting solution that will restore the park to its intended purpose as a recreational and social centre.

Olajokun Park should not be left to deteriorate indefinitely while repeated appeals from the community go unanswered. The people of Gbongan deserve to see their public facilities maintained and put to productive use.

We appeal to the state government to act swiftly before the situation deteriorates further. Saving Olajokun Park is not merely about renovating a public facility; it is about protecting public investment, addressing community concerns, promoting public safety, and restoring a valuable recreational asset to the people of Gbongan.
