Niger Abduction: Police Step Up Hunt for Worshippers as IGP Arrives Minna

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has arrived in Minna, Niger State, as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue worshippers abducted from communities in Borgu Local Government Area.

Disu’s arrival on Saturday followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for security agencies to secure the release of the victims and bring those responsible for the attacks to justice.

The abductees were taken during an attack on communities in the Borgu area, including an incident at a mosque in Dekara during Friday prayers. The coordinated attacks also left several residents dead and forced others to flee their communities.

The exact number of people abducted remains unclear. While local accounts have reported figures running into the hundreds, Niger State authorities have said they are still working to establish the verified number rather than rely on unconfirmed figures.

The police have deployed tactical and counter-terrorism teams, alongside other security formations, to support the rescue operation. The Police Air Wing and other specialised units are also involved in efforts to locate the victims and track the attackers.

Before Disu’s arrival, the police had already deployed Assistant Inspector General of Police Victor Olaiya and other tactical teams to Niger State. Authorities said the operation is being carried out in collaboration with the military and the Niger State Government.

The situation has also drawn growing concern from political and community leaders, with calls for the immediate and safe release of the abducted worshippers and residents.

Niger State authorities previously disclosed that no contact had been established with the abductors and said they were still gathering information about the incident. Officials have also urged residents and local communities to cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue.

With the IGP now in Minna, the police leadership is expected to strengthen coordination of the ongoing operation as security forces continue their search for the abducted victims and pursue the perpetrators.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over mass abductions and attacks in parts of North-Central Nigeria, putting further pressure on security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and rescue victims held by criminal groups.
