The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, warning Nigerians and the media to disregard any suspicious or misleading information that may be posted from the affected platform.

The Army said the incident occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and is being treated as a cybersecurity breach.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, the military said it detected the attempted breach and immediately activated technical and protective measures to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information being disseminated through it.

The Army stressed that efforts were ongoing to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.

It consequently advised members of the public, journalists and other stakeholders to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content emanating from the account while the security incident is being resolved.

According to the military, such content should not be regarded as the official position of the Nigerian Army.

The Army also urged the public and the media to verify information about its activities through its other recognised communication channels until the issue is fully resolved.

The alternative platforms listed by the Army include its Facebook accounts, @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; Instagram accounts, @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; its X account, @nigerianarmyinfo; and YouTube accounts, @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.

The military said the incident underscored the importance of protecting official communication platforms, particularly those used to disseminate information on military activities and national security matters.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, while appreciating the vigilance and cooperation of members of the public.
