The death of veteran Edo politician and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Chief Daniel Osi Orbih, has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, institutions and associates across the state and beyond.

Orbih, who died on Monday, August 31, 2026, was a prominent figure in Edo politics and served as the National Vice Chairman of the PDP in the South-South.

He also served as the Chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, where he was recognised for his contributions to the development and stability of the institution.

Reacting to his death, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, expressed condolences to the Orbih family, describing the late politician as a bridge-builder and a voice of reason.

Okpebholo commended Orbih’s contributions to public service, political development and education, particularly his role in the affairs of Ambrose Alli University.

The governor described his death as a significant loss to his family, Edo State and the university community, while praying for the family and other associates he left behind.

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party also mourned the former party leader, describing his death as a major loss to the party and the state.

In a statement, the party said Orbih’s decades of political engagement reflected his commitment to democratic governance, party unity and public service.

The PDP described him as a political figure whose influence extended beyond party structures, noting his contributions to the development of Edo State and Nigeria.

Ambrose Alli University also expressed shock over Orbih’s death, recalling his service as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.

The university management said Orbih left a significant mark through his commitment to good governance, academic excellence, institutional stability and sustainable development.

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, also joined those mourning the late politician, describing Orbih as an influential voice who made significant contributions to the political history of Edo State.

Obaseki acknowledged Orbih’s years of service to the PDP, including his tenure as the party’s chairman in Edo State and later as National Vice Chairman, South-South.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who shared a longstanding political relationship with Orbih, also mourned his death, describing him as a close friend and dependable political ally.

Orbih’s death has continued to generate reactions from political associates, party members and institutions that had interacted with him throughout his years of public and political service.

The family is expected to announce details of his burial arrangements later.
