The Delta State House of Assembly has called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to keep the 2027 election season peaceful, warning against actions capable of turning political competition into violence and division.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, made the appeal on Wednesday as lawmakers resumed plenary after their 2026 annual recess. He urged political actors to approach the coming elections with maturity and place the interests of the state above personal and political differences.
Guwor said the campaigns should focus on ideas, programmes, competence, character and service, rather than personal attacks, bitterness and violence.
He stressed that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair, urging political parties, candidates, supporters and members of the public to respect democratic principles and allow voters to freely choose their preferred candidates.
The Speaker’s warning comes as political activities for the 2027 general elections gather momentum across the country, with campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections already underway.
According to Guwor, campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections began on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on September 9.
He therefore urged all stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid inflammatory actions capable of threatening the peace and security of Delta State.
Delta Assembly gets nine additional constituencies
The Speaker also highlighted the planned expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, the number of State Constituencies in Delta will increase from 29 to 38, creating nine additional constituencies.
Guwor described the development as historic, saying it would give more communities direct representation in the legislative process and strengthen grassroots participation in governance.
He noted that representation remains a central part of democracy, adding that the additional constituencies would provide more residents with an opportunity to have their voices heard through elected representatives.
The Assembly’s return to plenary also marks the beginning of another phase of legislative work, with lawmakers expected to attend to pending Bills, Motions and Petitions before the end of the legislative session.
Guwor called on committee chairmen and members to work with renewed commitment and ensure that legislative matters receive prompt attention.
He also encouraged lawmakers to put the knowledge gained from their leadership training at the London Business School into practical use in carrying out their responsibilities.
The Speaker further commended the Delta State Government for organising the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the Assembly’s recess.
He described the summit as an important opportunity to showcase Delta’s investment potential and attract investors from within Nigeria and abroad.
Guwor assured investors that the House would continue to provide legislative support for policies designed to promote investment, enterprise and economic development in the state.
He also congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the creation of Delta State, which was marked while the Assembly was on recess.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the Speaker’s appeal adds to growing calls across the country for politicians and their supporters to avoid violence and preserve peace before, during and after the polls.
The Assembly is expected to continue its legislative activities while also providing oversight and representation as Delta prepares for the next electoral cycle.
