Kano Gov Vows Decisive Action as Bandit Attacks Hit Four LGAs

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has vowed to strengthen security across the state following a fresh wave of bandit attacks that has raised concerns over the safety of residents and their livelihoods.

The governor condemned the attacks reported in four local government areas, assuring affected communities that his administration was taking measures, in collaboration with security agencies, to prevent further incidents and restore confidence among residents.

The affected areas include Chiromawa in Garun Mallam Local Government Area, Beli in Rogo, Bebeji and communities around Gwarzo.

The governor described the attacks as disturbing and unacceptable, while sympathising with residents and families affected by the violence.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the state government has directed relevant authorities to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid-response mechanisms in communities considered vulnerable to attacks.

Yusuf also appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel by providing credible information that could assist authorities in preventing further attacks and identifying those responsible.

He commended security personnel for their efforts and urged them to sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at protecting vulnerable communities across the state.

The latest security concerns come after an attack on Chiroma Village in Garun Mallam on August 29, which triggered a wider security response involving both state and federal authorities.

Federal Government promises more support

The Federal Government has also assured Kano State of additional support to strengthen security operations following the recent attack.

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, gave the assurance during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano State Government House.

Matawalle said the Federal Government remained committed to defeating insecurity and restoring lasting peace, adding that additional operational support would be provided to security forces operating in the state.

He disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had constituted a committee to develop a five-year defence and security plan aimed at providing a longer-term framework for tackling security threats across the country.

The minister also revealed that security forces had carried out a joint rescue operation following the Garun Mallam attack.

The operation, led by the Commander of 3 Brigade, Kano, Brigadier General Jimoh, involved personnel from the Joint Task Force camps at Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora.

Matawalle said the operation resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims around the Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam Local Government Area.

He commended the troops involved in the operation and promised continued federal assistance to improve the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

The minister specifically assured Kano of additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to support security operations.

He also stressed that defeating insecurity would require cooperation among federal, state and local governments, as well as communities.

Matawalle urged residents to provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, saying information from citizens could help authorities respond more effectively to emerging threats.

Following the minister’s visit, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the state’s willingness to continue working with the Federal Government and security agencies to protect residents and strengthen security.

The governor’s latest pledge comes amid growing concerns about the impact of insecurity on rural communities, particularly farmers and traders whose livelihoods depend on being able to move freely and access their farms and businesses.

For Kano, the immediate challenge is to translate the government’s promises into stronger protection for communities exposed to attacks.

With the state government promising tighter surveillance and faster responses, alongside additional federal security support, authorities are under increasing pressure to prevent further attacks and restore a sense of safety among residents.
