The Osun State Police Command has arrested a woman following the sudden death of a young man identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, after a reported sexual encounter in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon on Ooni Ilare Street, in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife, throwing the community into tension as residents gathered around the scene.
Apetu was said to be a member of a local vigilante group. According to a situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. after the deceased reportedly had a sexual encounter with the woman.
The report stated that the man subsequently became severely distressed. He was reportedly seen gasping, screaming and pleading with the woman before eventually collapsing.
A video from the scene, which has circulated online, reportedly showed the deceased in distress while pleading with the woman and asking her to give him urine.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s sudden deterioration and death have, however, not been medically established. While some residents reportedly attributed the incident to what they described as a “thunderbolt,” the claim remains a traditional explanation and has not been confirmed as the medical cause of death by the authorities.
Following the incident, the woman was arrested and taken to the Moore Police Division in Ile-Ife, where she was reportedly placed in custody as investigations commenced.
The man’s remains were subsequently deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife.
The development attracted attention in the community, with residents seeking answers over what could have caused the young man’s sudden medical distress and death shortly after the reported encounter.
The NSCDC in Osun was said to be aware of the incident, while the police also acknowledged reports surrounding the case. Authorities have urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions from unverified accounts circulating on social media and allow investigators to establish the circumstances of the death.
The arrest of the woman does not in itself establish criminal responsibility, as investigations are expected to determine what happened before, during and after the encounter and whether any offence was committed.
The police are therefore expected to establish the actual cause of death and determine whether further action will be taken against the woman or any other person connected to the incident.
The case has continued to generate public interest in Ile-Ife, particularly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding Apetu’s death and the conflicting explanations being circulated about what happened to him.
As of the latest report, the woman remained in police custody while investigations continued, and no official medical finding confirming the cause of the man’s death had been made public.
