First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East in Anambra State, as part of efforts to strengthen food support for vulnerable Nigerians and improve access to basic necessities.

The First Lady launched the programme on Thursday during her official visit to Anambra State, where she also supervised an empowerment initiative that benefited 5,000 residents.

The food bank programme is designed to provide support to vulnerable households and communities while complementing the Federal Government’s interventions aimed at addressing food insecurity and easing the economic pressure on families.

The initiative forms part of the social intervention programmes being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with emphasis on supporting people at the grassroots and ensuring that government assistance reaches those who need it most.

Speaking during the programme, Oluremi Tinubu stressed the importance of community-based support in tackling hunger and improving the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.

She said initiatives such as the food bank would help strengthen existing government efforts by providing direct assistance to families and communities facing economic hardship.

The First Lady also used the occasion to empower 5,000 beneficiaries in Anambra State. The empowerment programme was targeted at providing beneficiaries with support that could improve their livelihoods and enable them to become more economically productive.

The beneficiaries comprised people from different sections of the community, reflecting the broader objective of the intervention to reach individuals and families who require assistance.

The Anambra visit also provided an opportunity for the First Lady to highlight the need for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, communities and other stakeholders in addressing social and economic challenges.

The launch of the South-East food bank is expected to strengthen the distribution of food assistance within the region and complement other measures aimed at reducing the impact of rising living costs on vulnerable households.

The intervention also comes amid continued concerns over food security and the ability of low-income families to cope with economic pressures across the country.

The National Community Food Bank Programme is part of the broader social support approach of the Tinubu administration, which seeks to provide assistance to vulnerable Nigerians while creating opportunities for economic empowerment.
