The Primary Health Centre (PHC) Oke-Gada in Ede, Osun State, has recorded a major milestone in primary healthcare delivery with the successful performance of its first emergency Caesarean Section (CS), resulting in the safe delivery of a 3.5-kilogramme baby.

The landmark procedure, described as the first of its kind in the history of primary healthcare delivery in Osun State, was successfully carried out by Dr. Ashafa Musa and his medical team, who ensured the safety of both the mother and her newborn.

The Executive Secretary of the Osun State Primary Health Care Development Board (OSPHCB), Dr. Shina Igbalaye, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Osogbo and made available to newsmen by the Board’s spokesperson, Mr. Ope Bello.

Igbalaye, who visited the health centre on Friday, said the patient had consistently received antenatal care at the facility throughout her pregnancy, with a vaginal delivery initially anticipated before circumstances necessitated emergency surgical intervention.

He commended the medical team for their professionalism and dedication, noting that the successful procedure underscored the growing capacity of primary healthcare facilities in the state to provide critical and life-saving services.

The OSPHCB Executive Secretary also expressed appreciation to the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his continued investment in the health sector, particularly the recent recruitment of healthcare workers and the ongoing upgrading, rehabilitation and strengthening of PHCs across the state.

According to him, the successful emergency Caesarean Section at Oke-Gada PHC was further evidence that the administration’s investments in primary healthcare were yielding tangible results for residents.

He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sustaining quality healthcare delivery across the state, while ensuring that residents, particularly pregnant women, mothers and children, have access to affordable, effective and timely healthcare services within their communities.

Speaking on the development, the father of the newborn, Mr. Adeniyi Kehinde, expressed appreciation to the medical team for their diligence, commitment and professionalism in handling the situation.

Kehinde also commended the Osun State Government for its investment in the health sector and the upgrading of primary healthcare facilities across the state.

He noted that the procedure would have cost the family hundreds of thousands of naira if undertaken at a private hospital, expressing gratitude that his wife was able to receive the life-saving intervention free of charge at the PHC.
He said the development would go a long way in bringing quality and affordable healthcare closer to residents, particularly those who may not be able to afford the cost of specialised medical services in private hospitals.

The milestone at Oke-Gada PHC, he added, represents another significant step towards strengthening primary healthcare delivery and reducing the burden of accessing essential maternal and emergency healthcare services in Osun communities.
