Youths are regarded as the future leaders and valuable assets of every society. Their energy, creativity, and potential contribute significantly to social, economic, and political development. However, the increasing rate of drug abuse among young people has become a major challenge in many parts of the world. Drug abuse occurs when individuals use drugs in a way that is harmful to their health, well-being, or society. What often begins as experimentation or recreation can gradually develop into addiction and dependency. As more youths become involved in the misuse of drugs, concerns continue to grow about the effects on their health, education, relationships, and future prospects. This issue has therefore become a serious social problem that requires urgent attention from families, schools, communities, and governments.

Drug abuse among youths has become one of the most serious social problems facing many societies today. It refers to the harmful or excessive use of drugs without medical prescription or for purposes other than their intended use. Young people are increasingly becoming involved in the misuse of substances such as cannabis, cocaine, tramadol, codeine, heroin, and other dangerous drugs. This trend has raised concerns among parents, educators, health professionals, and government agencies. Several factors contribute to drug abuse among youths. One major cause is peer pressure. Many young people are influenced by friends who encourage them to experiment with drugs in order to fit into a particular group. Curiosity and the desire to try new experiences also lead some youths into substance abuse. In addition, family problems such as poor parental supervision, broken homes, and domestic violence can push young people towards drugs as a means of escape. The influence of social media, movies, and music that glorify drug use also contributes to the growing problem

Drug abuse has numerous negative effects on youths and society as a whole. It affects physical and mental health, leading to addiction, depression, anxiety, and other medical complications. Drug-abusing youths often perform poorly in school, lose interest in education, and may eventually drop out. Many become involved in criminal activities such as theft, cultism, violence, and cybercrime in order to finance their drug habits. This increases insecurity and hinders societal development. The economic impact of drug abuse is also significant. Families spend large amounts of money on treatment and rehabilitation, while governments allocate resources to law enforcement and healthcare services. The productivity of young people, who are expected to contribute positively to national development, is reduced. As a result, society loses valuable human resources that could have been used for growth and progress. Addressing drug abuse among youths requires collective efforts from all stakeholders. Parents should maintain open communication with their children and provide proper guidance and supervision. Schools should organize awareness campaigns and counseling programs to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse. Religious organizations, community leaders, and the media should also play active roles in promoting positive values and healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, government agencies should strengthen drug control policies and provide accessible rehabilitation centers for affected individuals. Drug abuse among youths is not merely an individual problem but a societal issue that demands urgent attention. If left unchecked, it can threaten the future of young people and hinder the development of society. Therefore, everyone must work together to prevent drug abuse and create an environment where youths can thrive and reach their full potential.

In conclusion, drug abuse among youths is a growing concern that poses serious threats to individuals, families, and society at large. Its causes range from peer pressure and curiosity to family challenges and negative social influences. The consequences include poor academic performance, health problems, criminal behavior, and reduced productivity. Since youths play a vital role in the future development of society, it is important to protect them from the dangers of drug abuse. Through proper education, parental guidance, effective government policies, and community support, the problem can be reduced. By working together, society can help young people make positive choices and build a healthier and more productive future.
