A tragic domestic incident in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State has claimed the lives of a Celestial Church of Christ shepherd and his wife after a marital disagreement reportedly escalated into violence.
The deceased shepherd, identified as Bidemi Odukoya, was attached to the Celestial Church of Christ, Iri Orun Parish, Akiode Ibogun, in Ifo. His wife, identified as Adenike, also died following the incident, leaving residents of the community shocked by the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of August 31, 2026, at the couple’s residence in the Ibogun Akinode area. Reports indicate that an argument broke out between the couple over allegations relating to marital infidelity.
The disagreement reportedly became violent, with Odukoya allegedly attacking his wife during the confrontation. He was said to have used a machete and a wooden stool during the altercation, leaving his wife critically injured.
The matter was reportedly brought to the attention of the police at about 2am, prompting officers from the Ibogun Police Division to visit the residence and begin preliminary investigations.
Following the incident, the wife’s remains were reportedly taken to the mortuary at Ifo General Hospital, where they were preserved pending further examination.
However, the tragedy took another turn when Odukoya reportedly fled the area after the confrontation.
While attempting to escape, he was reportedly involved in a fatal accident at Coker Junction along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. According to reports, he ran into the path of a moving truck and was struck by the vehicle.
Police detectives reportedly visited the location and later went to the mortuary where the victim from the road accident had been deposited. Photographs were reportedly taken as part of efforts to establish the identity of the deceased.
The victim was subsequently identified as Odukoya, the same man linked to the earlier domestic incident involving his wife.
The deaths of the couple reportedly occurred within the same day, creating a disturbing situation for residents and those who knew the family. Reports further indicate that the husband and wife were both buried beside their residence later that day.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences that can result when marital disagreements are allowed to escalate into physical confrontation.
While allegations of infidelity were reportedly at the centre of the dispute, such allegations remain claims surrounding the incident and should not be treated as established facts without the conclusion of an official investigation.
The tragedy also underscores the importance of seeking peaceful ways to resolve serious marital disagreements. Religious leaders, family members, counsellors and other appropriate support systems can play important roles in helping couples manage conflicts before they become dangerous.
As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding the wife’s death and the events that led to Odukoya’s fatal encounter with the truck remain subjects of police inquiry.
The incident has left the community mourning two lives lost in a matter of hours and serves as a grim reminder of how quickly domestic conflicts can turn into irreversible tragedy.
