Born Olayinka Joel Ayefele on February 1, 1968, in Ipoti-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Ayefele had his early education at Our Saviours Anglican Primary School in his hometown before proceeding to the Ondo State College of Arts and Science in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.

Before becoming famous as a musician, Ayefele was already building a career in broadcasting. He worked with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ibadan, where he worked as a broadcaster and was involved in producing radio jingles and musical works. Music was therefore not entirely new to him when an unexpected event changed the direction of his life.

On December 12, 1997, Ayefele was involved in a serious automobile accident while travelling on the Ibadan-Abeokuta road. The accident damaged his spinal cord and left him permanently dependent on a wheelchair. He spent about nine months in hospital recovering from the injuries.fresh fm

It was during that difficult period that music began to take on a completely different meaning for him. While he was in hospital, his friend Kola Olootu encouraged him to put some songs together. What appeared at first to be an attempt to occupy himself during recovery eventually became the foundation of a career that would make him one of the most recognisable names in Yoruba gospel music.

In 1998, Ayefele released his debut album, Bitter Experience. The title reflected the ordeal he had gone through following the accident, while the album introduced him to a much wider audience and brought him into the limelight. He subsequently released Sweet Experience, a title that represented the brighter chapter that followed his difficult experience.

From there, Ayefele steadily established himself in the gospel music scene. His distinctive sound, built around Yoruba lyrics, gospel messages and strong percussion, became associated with what is widely described as gospel Tungba. Rather than allowing his physical condition to limit his ambitions, he continued recording, performing and developing his craft.

Over the years, he released numerous albums, including Something Else, Divine Intervention, Life After Death, Prayer Point, Goodness of God, Fresh Glory, Living Testimony, Beyond the Limits, Manifestation, So Far So Good and other projects. His music has also taken him beyond Nigeria, earning him audiences among Nigerians and lovers of gospel music in different parts of the world.

But Ayefele’s story did not end with music.

Having started his professional life in broadcasting, he eventually returned to the industry in a much bigger way. In 2015, he established Fresh FM, beginning with the Ibadan station before expanding the brand to other parts of South-West Nigeria. The venture brought together two major parts of his professional identity music and broadcasting.

His journey as a media entrepreneur also came with its own challenges. In August 2018, the building housing his Music House and Fresh FM operation in Ibadan was demolished by the Oyo State Government, a development that generated widespread public reaction. Despite the setback, Ayefele continued with the radio business and rebuilt his operation.

Beyond his work as an entertainer and broadcaster, Ayefele has received significant recognition for his contributions to Nigerian music and culture. Among his honours is the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award, which he received in 2011. His career has also earned him numerous other awards and recognitions.

What makes Yinka Ayefele’s story particularly remarkable is the point at which his greatest setback became the beginning of another chapter. Before the accident, he was a broadcaster working behind the scenes. After it, he found a new voice through music and built a career that eventually returned him to broadcasting as a station owner.

More than two decades after the release of Bitter Experience, Ayefele remains an influential figure in Yoruba gospel music and broadcasting. His career continues to stand as an example of how determination can turn a painful experience into a source of purpose, creativity and achievement.
