Leadership is not merely about occupying an office. It is about the people one touches, the values one demonstrates, the relationships one builds and the footprints one leaves behind. In the political history of Osun State, few personalities have generated as much discussion, loyalty and political attention as Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola.

To many of those who have encountered him closely, Oyetola is more than a politician. He is a father figure, a mentor, a bridge-builder and a man whose political journey continues to attract interest across Osun State and beyond.

Born and raised in Osun, Oyetola’s public journey reflects a combination of professional experience, administrative exposure and political engagement. Before becoming governor, he served as Chief of Staff to Governor Rauf Aregbesola. His years in government gave him considerable experience in the machinery of administration and public service.

In 2018, Oyetola emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Osun governorship election and subsequently became the state’s fourth executive governor under the Fourth Republic. He was sworn into office on November 27, 2018.

His emergence marked another chapter in the political evolution of Osun State.

A GOVERNOR WITH A RECORD

As governor, Oyetola inherited an administration with an established policy direction and continued several programmes of his predecessor. The official history of Osun State describes his administration as one known for continuity with the policies of the Rauf Aregbesola government.

Beyond official positions, however, leadership is often remembered through personal relationships. This is where Oyetola, in my experience and observation, stands out.

A father does not necessarily have to be the oldest person in the room. A father is someone who provides guidance, encouragement and a sense of direction. For many people who have worked with or around Oyetola, his ability to relate with people across different generations and backgrounds has been an important part of his political identity.

His supporters often speak of his calm disposition, accessibility and willingness to listen. These qualities have contributed to the loyalty of many people within his political family.

THE 2022 ELECTION AND THE TEST OF LEADERSHIP

Politics is a journey filled with victories and setbacks. Oyetola’s political career experienced one of its most defining moments in the 2022 Osun governorship election.

He contested for a second term against Ademola Adeleke. The official Osun State record states that Adeleke defeated Oyetola by 402,979 votes to 375,077 and was subsequently sworn in as governor on November 27, 2022.

For any political leader, losing an election can be a difficult moment. Yet political life does not end with an electoral setback. Rather, it often becomes a test of resilience, relationships and commitment to one’s political ideals.

Oyetola’s subsequent return to federal public service further demonstrated the continuing relevance of his political career. He later became Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, bringing his experience from state administration into the federal government.

A POLITICAL ENIGMA

Why do I describe Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola as a political enigma?

An enigma is someone whose personality, influence or methods cannot be easily reduced to a simple explanation.

Oyetola’s political journey contains several layers. He has experienced the heights of electoral victory, the disappointment of electoral defeat, judicial battles, federal appointment and continued political relevance.

His name remains a significant reference point whenever political developments in Osun are discussed.

Even after leaving the Osun Government House, his political activities have continued to attract strong reactions from supporters and opponents alike. Recent political controversies in the state have featured competing claims involving Oyetola and the current Osun administration, demonstrating how central his political influence remains to contemporary debates in the state. These claims are contested by the parties involved and should therefore be understood as political positions rather than settled facts.

THE FATHER FIGURE

Beyond politics, there is another side of Oyetola that deserves recognition: the human side.

Leadership becomes more meaningful when it produces relationships that survive beyond political appointments.

To many of his associates, Oyetola represents someone who can encourage younger people, recognise potential and provide opportunities for people to grow.

This is the quality of a father.

A father does not necessarily give everyone everything they ask for. Sometimes, fatherhood means correcting, advising, encouraging and preparing people for challenges ahead.

That dimension of Oyetola’s personality is one that I personally admire.

A LEADER OF CALM DISPOSITION

In an environment where political communication can sometimes become confrontational, Oyetola has often projected a relatively measured public personality.

His supporters see this as evidence of composure and maturity. His critics, naturally, interpret aspects of his political conduct differently. That difference of perception is itself part of what makes political leadership complex.

No political leader can satisfy everyone.

What matters is the record left behind, the people influenced and the contribution made to society.

HIS PLACE IN OSUN POLITICAL HISTORY

Whatever one’s political affiliation may be, it is difficult to discuss the political history of contemporary Osun without mentioning Gboyega Oyetola.

He served as governor from 2018 to 2022, contested for another term in 2022, and subsequently served at the federal level. His career therefore spans state administration, electoral politics and federal government service.

That journey has given him a distinctive place in the political history of Osun.

For me, however, his greatest value is not simply the offices he has occupied.

It is the relationships.

It is the people who call him father.

It is the younger generation that sees him as a source of guidance.

It is the political associates who continue to identify with his leadership.

And it is the belief among his supporters that his political story is still evolving.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

History is rarely written in a single chapter.

For Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, the story continues to evolve.

From a professional background to the Osun Government House, from electoral victory to electoral defeat, and from state leadership to federal responsibility, his journey has been marked by significant transitions.

Whether one sees him primarily as a politician, administrator, mentor or father figure, one fact remains: Gboyega Oyetola has become an important personality in the political history of Osun State.

As someone who has had the privilege of observing his leadership and human relationships, I consider him not merely a political leader, but a father to many, a mentor to some and a political enigma whose journey continues to command attention.
